What is energy deregulation?
For many years, customers were forced to receive their energy services from regulated monopolies. This completely eliminated customers' ability to shop for competitive utility plans. All energy service needs were provided by one local distribution utility, or LDU, forcing customers to receive every aspect of their energy service - generation, sales, delivery, billing, and support - from one provider.

In recent years, states have begun adopting deregulation. New York became a deregulated state in the late 1990s, which ultimately restructured its energy market. Customers are now able to shop for competitive rates from various Energy Service Companies or ESCOs. Now you have the power to choose in New York for the best energy rates!
How do I choose an Energy Service Company?
The New York State Public Service Commission requires the LDU to continue delivering electricity and maintaining its infrastructure by responding to service interruptions, outages, and general maintenance.

However, Energy Service Companies, or ESCOs, offer a wide array of competitive energy plans for customers to choose from. How do ESCOs, like Frontier, and LDUs relate to each other? ESCOs supply customers with energy service while LDUs transport the energy through their operating power lines.
Think of shopping for potato chips. Your local grocery story provides various brands, and you make your decision based on quality and price. It's the same process for selecting your energy service company!
What about gas?
In New York, both electricity and gas services are deregulated. Like electricity, customers will select an ESCO to provide natural gas, while their LDUs will deliver it. Some ESCOs focus solely on providing either electricity or gas. Luckily, Frontier has you covered in both areas.
How does billing work?
You are given the option to receive standard energy plans with your local utility. In this instance, the LDU will deliver and provide energy. If you opt to receive energy from a separate energy service provider, like Frontier, billing will still be sent through your LDU.
How do you switch?
Switching is easy and takes less than 5 minutes!
- Find your LDU account number located on your current electric bill
- Select your new Frontier Plan
- Sign up by providing your LDU account number and start paying less for electricity and gas! Your new energy rate with Frontier will reflect on the next bill provided by your LDU.
